The tooling on this journal comes from the illuminated manuscript known as the Book of Kells.  In the Dark Ages after the fall of Rome, Irish monks transcribed the Holy Bible, interspersing beautiful artwork with their transcription, and basing new Celtic Christian art on older pagan Celtic art.  This image is from that work.  It features a beautiful and intricate Celtic cross.

The cross is made using intertwined snakes.  Snakes are a device of St Patrick, who reputedly drove the snakes from Ireland and brought Christianity to the Irish.
